「SIM」全稱是「subscriber identity module」
即「用戶身分模組」。它的主要作用是儲存資料，包括一些固定數據。

蘋果等先行者的帶動下，SIM 從外型上卻一路有著「縮水」的趨勢。
雖然其範圍僅限於周邊的塑料卡托而已，但不難看出，SIM 卡小型化已經是一個被成功驗證的正確方向。
甚至有人提出，應當要取消物理形態的 SIM 卡，將其轉變為軟體的形式，對於後者，我們稱之為「虛擬 SIM 卡」。

而... eSIM前生，應是Apple SIM
Apple SIM事實上仍舊是一張實體SIM卡，但是相對於在iPad中電信業者提供的SIM卡，
Apple SIM可以讓你在不換卡的前提下，透過在 iPad 上，前往「設定」>「行動數據」>「設定行動數據」，就可隨時更換電信業者的服務。
